Esquisse Design Hotel

Schuchmann Wines Château, Villas & Spa sits inside a working winery in Kisiskhevi, a village in Kakheti, Georgia's principal wine region, with the Caucasus range filling the horizon behind the vine rows. The estate is built around Schuchmann Wines, a producer that pairs German winemaking technique with Georgia's ancient qvevri method, fermenting wine in buried clay vessels using a process recognised internationally as intangible cultural heritage. Twenty rooms sit inside a stone-and-brick château, with a scatter of private villas set further into the vineyard for guests who want more distance from the main house. It is less a hotel that happens to have a vineyard than a vineyard that happens to take guests.
Three things set the decision apart from a generic countryside hotel. The wine programme is the real thing, not a tasting room bolted onto a hotel lobby: Schuchmann is a working producer whose bottles carry weight with European wine press. The villas, built in Kakhetian vernacular style from river stone and nineteenth-century brick, each come with a private pool and their own living space, a rarity at this scale. And the wine spa treats guests with preparations built from the estate's own grape and marc, tying the wellness side back to the vineyard rather than importing a generic spa menu.
Kisiskhevi sits a short drive from Telavi, the unofficial capital of Kakheti and the natural base for exploring Georgia's wine country, with the Alazani valley's vineyards spreading out below the Caucasus foothills. The region moves at the pace of a harvest rather than a city break: wineries, qvevri cellars and roadside wine stands outnumber traffic lights. For guests without a car, the estate's own grounds already hold enough to fill a weekend, which matters in a part of Georgia where public transport is thin and distances between sights are better measured in winery visits than in minutes.

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: The wine spa's treatments, built from the estate's own grape and marc rather than a standard spa menu

Amenities: Wine spa, indoor and outdoor pools, private villa pools, chapel, horse riding, mini-golf, billiards

The main château holds Deluxe Double, Family and Standard Double rooms, each with a balcony or terrace facing the garden or the mountains beyond, and furnished plainly enough that the view stays the focus. The villas are the better booking for a longer stay or a group: two isolated double rooms with their own bathrooms share a living room, a small kitchen and a fireplace, built from river stone and reclaimed nineteenth-century Kakhetian brick, with furniture designed specifically for the project rather than bought off a catalogue. Each villa also gets its own small pool, a genuine rarity among Georgian countryside hotels.
Wine sits at the centre of a stay here rather than at its edges. Guided tastings move between Schuchmann's European-style bottlings and its qvevri wines, fermented in buried clay vessels using a method that predates the château by thousands of years. The wine spa carries the theme into treatments built from the estate's own grape and marc, a more coherent idea than importing a generic product line. Beyond wine, the grounds run to indoor and outdoor pools, a chapel that hosts small weddings, horse riding, mini-golf and billiards, enough to keep a family or a group occupied without leaving the property.
Check-in opens at 3pm and stretches to 8pm, with check-out between 7am and noon, a wider window than most city hotels allow and useful after a day spent moving between cellars. The estate includes its own travel-agency desk for arranging transfers and excursions, a practical detail in a region where public transport is sparse. Families are welcome, and the villas in particular suit a group or multi-generation booking better than the château's standard rooms. This is a destination to build a few nights around, not a stopover between two other places.
