The Georgian Military Highway runs below, and that is the practical detail here: it climbs toward Kazbegi and the Gergeti valley in one direction and drops back to Tbilisi in the other, so a ski week can absorb a day in the mountains without skis. In summer the same slopes become hiking and horse riding country, and the tour desk stays open for it.
