Six and a half kilometres north of Batumi the coast road climbs away from the seafront and the vegetation changes: tea terraces, bamboo, magnolias, the subtropical belt that made this cape famous long before the towers arrived. Capo Verde sits in the middle of it, at Mtsvane Kontskhi, with the Botanical Garden as a neighbour and the sea two minutes below. It is a family run hotel rather than a corporate one, thirty eight rooms behind a white facade, and its argument is simple: the Black Sea is better from here than from the middle of the city.

Why It Works

We kept it for the setting first. Green Cape is the one part of the Batumi coast that still reads as landscape, and a hotel with a garden and a terrace in it makes a different kind of week from a tower on the promenade. The room list is practical in a way that matters on a coast holiday: junior suites take the sea views, family suites come with kitchenettes, and accessible rooms exist, which is rare here. And the house is small enough to be run by the people who own it, with a front desk staffed through the night.

Why This Location

The beach at Mtsvane Kontskhi is a two minute walk downhill, quieter than the city strand and largely free of the summer crowd. The Batumi Botanical Garden, one of the great collections of the Caucasus, is next door and worth a full morning. Batumi itself is a short drive along the coast for the boulevard, the piazza and the evening, and Makhinjauri station is closer still. There is free parking on site and a shuttle service for a fee, which together make a car optional rather than essential.
