A Jazz Bar with a Hotel Underneath

Most of what has been built in Batumi over the past decade is tall, glassy and indistinguishable from the tower next door. Monarch went the other way: twenty two rooms on a quiet street two blocks behind the boulevard, a four star operation run at a scale where the staff learn your name. The idea that gives it away is on the top floor, where a jazz bar called Louis takes the best view in the building and fills it with live music, cocktails and low light instead of another suite. A hotel that spends its roof on its guests rather than its rate card is making a statement.

Why It Works

Three things kept it on the list. The rooftop bar is a genuine destination rather than an amenity, which changes what an evening here looks like. The range of rooms is broader than the size suggests, with six categories running up to a junior suite with its own terrace. And the service list is unusually complete for a house this small: sauna and massage, a billiard room, guided tours, airport transfers, laundry, a conference hall and parking that is included rather than charged, which on this street is not nothing.

Why This Location

Akhmed Melashvili Street sits in the older, denser part of central Batumi, a short walk back from the seafront boulevard and the beach, and within the same easy radius as Europe Square, the Piazza and the Ali and Nino sculpture on the promenade. This is the half of the city that still has ordinary shops and cafes at street level, which makes the walk home at night more interesting than a hotel strip. The airport road and the ferry terminal are both straightforward from here, and transfers are arranged by the hotel.

Six Categories, and the One with a Terrace

The room list runs from standard doubles through superior doubles and twins to deluxe kings, family rooms and a junior suite, each offered with either a city outlook or the quieter back aspect. The junior suite is the one to ask for: it comes with a terrace, which in a city this warm is the difference between a room and a place to sit. Everything is air conditioned, the housekeeping is daily, and the whole house is non smoking.

Louis, on the Top Floor

The jazz bar is the reason to book here rather than on the boulevard. It takes the top floor, programmes live music, mixes cocktails and serves food with the city spread out beneath the windows, and it draws people who are not staying in the hotel, which is the best sign a hotel bar can give. Breakfast and the restaurant cover the rest of the day, and the sauna and massage room handle the hour before dinner.

Business, and the Practical Side

The conference hall seats up to seventy with catering, which makes the house workable for a small event without turning it into a convention hotel. The desk runs around the clock and organises transfers and guided tours, laundry is handled in house, and parking is free on site. Batumi runs hot and humid in the high season, so the air conditioning and the back facing rooms are worth asking about together.
