Few hotels in Georgia have a story as tightly bound to their view. Vardzia Resort stands in the Mtkvari valley in Samtskhe-Javakheti, opposite the cliffs of Vardzia, the rock-hewn monastery city of Queen Tamar's era. Its founders are the descendants of Nikoloz Natenadze, a lawyer, restorer and scholar of Rustaveli who led the clearing of more than three hundred caves, the restoration of the Church of the Dormition and its frescoes, and became the first director of the Vardzia museum. Locals still call the village water supply he built Kolia's Water. The resort continues that work in its own way, bringing travellers to a region that deserves far more of them.
We selected Vardzia Resort because it is the address that makes a visit to Vardzia a stay rather than a long day trip from Tbilisi. The architecture is designed so that almost every room looks toward the valley and the cave town, and the grounds give you space: landscaped gardens, two outdoor pools, a spa and walking paths. Add a wine cellar with guided tastings and a kitchen devoted to Meskhian cooking, and you have a genuine base for southern Georgia, with a family history that gives the place a sense of purpose.
The resort sits near the village of Gogasheni, in the Akhalkalaki district, about 240 kilometres from Tbilisi. The Vardzia cave monastery is roughly a quarter of an hour away, close enough to visit early before the day-trippers arrive and again in the softer evening light. The dramatic Khertvisi Fortress stands along the same stretch of the Mtkvari valley, and the wider region rewards slow exploration, with canyon roads, small villages and hiking routes. This is remote country, which is exactly why a comfortable base matters: once you arrive, you will want at least two nights.

The rooms are contemporary and comfortable, from Standard rooms to Junior Suites, Suites, family rooms and separate cottages, and most open onto a private balcony with a seating area. Bathrobes and slippers, a minibar and a work desk are standard, but the real amenity is outside the window. The resort's layout was conceived around the view, so ask for a room facing the cave city: watching the cliffs change colour at dusk is the moment that stays with you.
The kitchen leans on the flavours of Meskheti, the historic region around Vardzia, with food that is fresh, local and in part produced at the resort itself. The buffet restaurant serves traditional dishes alongside wines from the cellar, while the lounge bar handles cocktails. For wine lovers, the cellar hosts tastings of local wines paired with appetisers from the chef, and a Wine for Two evening, with a bottle chosen by the sommelier, creative cuisine and an introduction to tasting, turns dinner into an occasion.
The spa is popular, so reserve treatments in advance. The resort's adventure centre can arrange cultural, wine and outdoor excursions tailored to your pace, which is useful in a region where public transport is limited. A car or a driver is the best way to arrive and to explore. With its gardens and pools, the resort also works well for families and for small celebrations.
