Jewelberry Glamping
Sometimes the best pick on our list isn't a hotel at all: Jewelberry Glamping sits...
Mtskheta announces itself before you arrive: the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, the cross on Jvari's hilltop, the fifth century bulk of Svetitskhoveli rising over low rooftops. Hotel 12 Tve sits two minutes' walk from that cathedral, on Kostava Street, in a recently renovated house that keeps its scale modest on purpose: six rooms, a garden, a terrace that catches the town's skyline rather than competing with it. It is not a hotel built to impress from the street; it is one built to put a good bed and a better view within walking distance of Georgia's holiest ground, and to let the town do the rest of the work.
We chose it for the walk it removes rather than the one it adds: staying inside Mtskheta's old town instead of commuting in from Tbilisi turns a rushed half day excursion into an evening spent watching floodlight settle on the cathedral after the coach tours leave. The rooms are small but properly finished, with soundproofed walls, air conditioning and a private balcony on the family suite, and the staff run the kind of house where breakfast is homemade rather than plated from a central kitchen. It is a quiet, boutique scaled base for travellers who want Georgia's ancient capital at walking pace.
Kostava Street sits inside Mtskheta's compact old town, 813 metres from the centre and an unhurried two minute walk from Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the UNESCO listed seat of the Georgian Orthodox Church. From the terrace, the view runs to Samtavro Monastery in one direction and up to the cross on Jvari's hilltop in the other, the same panorama pilgrims have climbed toward since the sixth century, seen here without the climb. Tbilisi is roughly forty minutes by road: close enough for a day trip into the capital, far enough that evenings in Mtskheta stay unhurried once the tour buses have gone.

Six rooms mean no two are alike. The Family Room with Balcony, 32 square metres and sleeping three, is the one worth requesting, its private balcony facing the old town rather than the car park; the Superior Doubles are smaller at 20 square metres but share the same soundproofing, minibar and bidet fitted bathrooms. None of it reaches for grandeur: there is no lobby to speak of, no spa, no restaurant beyond the breakfast room, and that restraint is the point. This is a house run for people who plan to spend their daylight hours outside it, at the cathedral, the monastery, or the wine cellars of Kakheti an hour further east.
The house has no elevator, worth knowing before requesting an upper floor with luggage. Staff speak Russian and English, not universal further into rural Georgia, which makes this a comfortable first or last stop on a longer itinerary. Airport transfers run about forty minutes given Tbilisi's evening traffic, and the free private parking is useful for travellers self driving toward Kazbegi or the Kakheti vineyards. Book the balcony room in shoulder season, when the terrace empties of day trippers and the cathedral floodlights come on early.
