Lileo Hotel
Mestia has no shortage of guesthouses claiming a view of the Svan towers, but Lileo...
Mestia sits at the heart of Upper Svaneti, a high valley of stone villages and medieval defence towers set against some of the tallest peaks of the Caucasus. Gistola takes its name from one of them, the glacier-covered summit that rises to 4,860 metres above the region. The hotel is modern in its lines and comfort, but it keeps the valley close: the lobby, built around a fireplace and a bar, is hung with old photographs of Mestia, its towers and the Svan families who lived here. Around half of the team comes from Mestia itself, which gives the welcome a local warmth that the architecture alone could not provide.
We selected Gistola because Svaneti has long been a place of guesthouses, and serious travellers need more than a bed after a day on the trails. Here the rooms are genuinely large, the beds are vast, the bathrooms have heated floors and rain showers, and a backup generator keeps the heat and hot water steady in a remote mountain town. Add an indoor pool facing the mountains, a sauna, a spa and a kitchen that cooks the dishes of the region, and you have the comfortable base that turns a trip to Upper Svaneti into a real holiday.
The hotel stands on the edge of Mestia, about 1.8 kilometres from the Museum of History and Ethnography, known for its medieval icons and manuscripts. The town centre, with its cafés and restaurants, is a fifteen to twenty minute walk, and the hotel runs a complimentary on-call driver for guests who would rather save their legs for the mountains. Being slightly out of town has its reward: quieter nights and wider views. Mestia is the starting point for the classic treks of Svaneti and for the ski slopes in winter.

All rooms are Deluxe or Suites, and the difference with the valley's traditional guesthouses is immediate. Beds are larger than a standard king, rooms have space for sitting chairs and a desk, and the bathrooms combine heated floors with powerful waterfall showers, a detail you appreciate after a long descent. Robes, a minibar, a safe and a tea and coffee station complete the setup. Rooms at the front look toward the Svan towers and the mountains beyond; those at the back face the slopes directly.
Svan food is hearty mountain cooking, and the restaurant treats it with respect: kubdari, the spiced meat pie of the region, chvishtari, the cornbread baked with cheese, and khachapuri in several local versions, served with Georgian wines and beers. Breakfast is a generous buffet of breads, pastries, hot dishes, Georgian cheeses and fruit. Afterwards, the wellness area does the rest, with an indoor pool that looks out at the mountains, a sauna available on booking and spa treatments.
Mestia is a long drive from Tbilisi, so plan at least three nights to make the journey worthwhile. The sauna carries an extra charge, and the on-call driver is worth using in the evening to reach restaurants in town. Families are well looked after, with play areas for children, and skiers will find dedicated storage for their equipment.
