Lileo Hotel
Mestia has no shortage of guesthouses claiming a view of the Svan towers, but Lileo...
Getting to Mestia is a commitment. The road climbs for hours out of Zugdidi into Upper Svaneti, a valley of stone defence towers that has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list for decades, and the reward at the end has historically been scenery rather than comfort. Chalet Mestia is part of the change. It stands on Betlemi Street in the centre of town, a building that sets historical Georgian architecture against modern rooms, and its restaurant, with timber beams and an antler chandelier, is treated as the main room of the house rather than a service to guests. That order of priorities is what makes the place worth writing about.
Three things. The first is the food: traditional Georgian alongside Svanetian regional cooking, which is its own kitchen, saltier and more mountain-minded than what you eat in Tbilisi, and a reason to stay in for dinner. The second is the range of rooms in a town where choice is thin, from twins to family suites with balconies, so a group of four is not forced into two separate bookings. The third is the walk. Being in the centre of Mestia means the museum, the cafes and the cable car are on foot, which matters when the weather turns and nobody wants to negotiate a mountain road.
Betlemi Street puts you in the middle of Mestia, and Mestia is the base for everything in Upper Svaneti. The Hatsvali cable car is within walking distance of the centre, with intermediate pistes above it and two sequential lifts to reach them. Tetnuldi, the bigger mountain, is seventeen kilometres out on an SUV road, with its first cable car at 2,260 metres, the highest at 3,160 metres, and freeride descents running down to around 1,400 metres. In summer the same town is the trailhead: the Chalaadi glacier walk, the climb to the Koruldi lakes, and the multi-day route out to Ushguli all start here.

In most mountain towns the hotel restaurant is a convenience. In Mestia it is a decision, because the options outside are few and the days are long. The dining room here leans into it: timber beams, Georgian motifs, an antler chandelier and a terrace that opens to the sky when the weather allows. The kitchen cooks Georgian classics and Svanetian regional dishes side by side, which is the more interesting half of the menu and the one to order from. Breakfast sets up a day on the mountain, and packed lunches are made for guests heading out on foot.
The fifteen rooms divide by outlook before they divide by size. Hillside rooms look onto the green slopes behind the town; Caucasus rooms take the mountain wall through large windows, which is the view people come to Svaneti for. Balconies come with several categories, including the family suite and the triple, so a family can spread out without booking twice. Everything is heated, which is not a given at this altitude, and the whole building is non-smoking.
Mestia has a small airport with seasonal flights, and the hotel can arrange a shuttle or a transfer; most travellers arrive by road from Zugdidi or Kutaisi and the drive is long whichever way you come. Once you are in, the centre is walkable and Hatsvali is reachable without a car. Tetnuldi and the more distant valleys need a driver with an SUV, which the front desk can organise. Check-in runs from early afternoon and check-out through the morning, so an early departure for the Ushguli road is straightforward.
